10 Best Macho Movies of All Time (And Why!)
Sitting down with a gripping movie is one of the best ways to relax or perhaps get in some heart-pounding and thrilling entertainment.
If you are looking for the world’s most macho movies of all time, here is our list of 10 of the best films to appeal to your masculine instinct along with why we think they fit the bill.
This list is in no particular order and is sure to polarize opinion so feel free to drop us a line if you can think of any glaring omission from our suggestions.
Now let’s get straight down to business!
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this 1987 classic. When a team of commandos is sent on a mission to Central America, they swiftly discover they aren’t the only ones doing the hunting. Chaos ensues as an alien life form goes up against this crack team in raw mortal combat.
Predator is pure action with energetic fight scenes, and brutal consequences for even the smallest mistakes. It earns its place in our favorite macho movies for its relentless action and lead actor who epitomizes masculinity.
You’ll never think of Christmas in the same way again after watching this action film. With Bruce Willis redefining action films, his character John McClain arrives at his wife’s workplace thinking he’s about to work out his marital problems. Instead, he ends up squaring up to a team of terrorists holding the entire building hostage.
Diehard features a captivating plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat to the very end, and is a perfect movie for even the most macho of men looking for a shot of movie testosterone.
3) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
A slightly more relaxed entry, Indiana Jones is perfect for those with an adventurous heart. In it, Harrison Ford as the legendary Indiana Jones helps a desperate village find a mystical stone and save their children from a cult that practices ritual sacrifice.
While it isn’t the modern adventure we tend to think of, Indiana Jones plays heavily into the hands of the audacious risk-taker who still wants to explore uncharted territory and make fresh discoveries.
4) Fight Club
While explicit violence is definitely a core part of this film, Fight Club rises above this with a plot that grabs hold of you and won’t let go.
Fight Club, starring Brad Pitt, is about a group of guys who form a recreational fight club. It’s also a story about mental health, and overcoming it as well as a searing indictment on consumerist society. The plot twists in this movie are hard to telegraph, and will keep you guessing until the credits roll.
Between the action-stuffed fight scenes and the agonizing plot shenanigans, we think this movie is an absolute must when compiling the most macho movies of all time. It’s the perfect film for any man that prizes an original plot line over special effects.
5) The Fast and the Furious
Fast Cars. Illegal street racing. This is the murky world of the Fast & Furious franchise.
The story follows an undercover police officer as he tries to figure out who is stealing expensive electronic equipment. As he begins to gain a foothold in the world of illicit street racing, his heart begins to soften toward the people he works with.
This story has a shower of relentless race scenes, as well as plenty of tightly coordinated action. It earns a space on our macho list for its winning blend of action and plot as well as the star Vin Diesel who could hardly be more of a man’s man.
Terminator is an innovative science fiction film that brings a cyborg from 2029 to 1984 for the purpose of killing Sarah Connor, who will one day have a son that will save the world from the evil machines. Kyle, a man also from the future, is tasked with the mission of keeping Sarah Connor safe.
This is an action-driven movie crammed with exciting fight scenes and narrow escapes against an efficient and deadly killing machine. It is the ideal vehicle for heart pounding entertainment with Schwarzenegger as the virile lead.
7) Gran Torino
No macho list would be complete without a Clint Eastwood film.
While we could have chosen any number of Clint movies, we opted for Gran Torino. Eastwood directed this 2008 smash hit as well as starring in it.
The drama involves a retired Korean War Veteran named Walt, and the boy of a Hmong family that lives next door, Thao. The action starts when the neighbor’s son attempts to steal Walt’s car for a gang initiation. The gang, outraged by Thao’s failure, tries to kill him. Instead, Walt is successfully able to fend them off and earns their immediate respect.
Eventually Thao and Walt form a bond, and as things escalate with the gang once again, they learn to fight together.
Gran Torino is Clint Eastwood’s second highest grossing film, but it goes well beyond box office figures. This is the perfect dramatic alternative to the pure action films that we usually associate with machismo.
8) The Expendables
Sylvester Stallone brings an exciting ensemble film to this line up with The Expendables. In this commercial success, a group of elite mercenaries must overthrow a Latin American dictator. This movie was highly praised for its breakneck action scenes and features an impressive roster of classic macho stars.
We added this to our list for its testosterone-fueled roller coaster ride as well as the exceptional cast.
9) Conan the Barbarian
While barbarians have gone out of style in recent years, the iconic picture of a sword-wielding and shirtless Conan as he wrestles his way through one fight scene after another still registers highly on the macho scale.
Conan the Barbarian boasts an entire franchise of great movies and even a TV series to enjoy, so if you are looking for something to binge watch, you can’t do much better than sucking up some more Arnie in the form of Conan.
Rounding out our list of the 10 most macho films of all time is Rocky, the 1976 classic that is still enduringly popular today.
Rocky tells the story of heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed who chooses a local contender to fight against when his intended match fell through.
Stallone plays Rocky Balboa, a fighter who uses anything and everything he can find to practice, and then battles mano-a-mano with Apollo.
The epic final fight is on its own enough to guarantee Rocky a place on this list but the tension tightly woven throughout makes it a genuine movie masterpiece.
A worthy addition to any list, Rocky is the ultimate macho film for its bloody and realistic view of the boxing world.
We hope you enjoyed this brief glance at our favorite macho movies.
Feel free to drop us a line and let us know your thoughts and try firing one up now for a shot of pure masculinity in movie-form.
